D/R began working with IVBAM, the consortium of Madeira producers, in 2007, although our earliest tasting was in 1999 for Justino’s Madeira Wines. The primary focus has been to educate the Trade and Press about the unique aspects of Madeira wine production and history.

Walk-Around Trade Tastings for IVBAM

These tastings, held annually in multiple cities, including New York, Chicago, and Washington, DC, featured the top Madeira houses pouring a range of different styles of Madeira from new releases to rare, 100+ year old vintages. The tasting in 2007 attracted an enormous audience of Trade and Press, since it was the first comparative Madeira tasting in several years. Subsequent tastings took place in New York in 2010, 2012 and 2013; in Chicago in 2012, and in Washington, DC in 2013.

Educational Seminars for the Trade

Coordinated with the Walk-Around Trade tastings, we produced guided tasting seminars to educate the Trade and Press about various aspects of Madeira wine, from the history and production of the various styles; to the historical importance of Madeira, both in international trade and American history; and to its versatility as a food-friendly wine, pairing the wines with multiple savory and sweet dishes. Speakers have included Robin Kelley O’Connor, John Laloganes, George Mendes, Jay Youmans, M.W., Dr. David Hancock, Professor of History, University of Michigan, and Lisa Granik, M.W.

Educational Seminars for Students

As an extension of the IVBAM's focus on educating Trade and Press, we produced seminars specifically for wine and culinary students. This is an important part of our effort to educate the next generation of wine influencers. In addition to history and production background, these seminars offered guided tastings of a number of different types of Madeira, usually pairing them with both savory and sweet dishes. Seminars were held for students at the International Culinary School at the Illinois Institute of Art--Chicago; the Capital Wine School, Washington DC; the Institute of Culinary Education, NYC, and the International Wine Center, NYC.

Press Trips

Approximately once a year, we put together a small group of key Press and Educators to visit the Island, tour vineyards and wineries, learn about the winemaking process, and experience the culture first hand. In most cases, these travelers become Ambassadors for the category, writing and or lecturing on the subject in depth, and with great enthusiasm.
